The Parish Room At the end of the 19th century the only recreation facility for the working man was the off licence on Maytree Road known as the 'Cellar'. It served home brewed cider, beer and tobacco. The men could not drink on the premises so they sat on the grass verge outside. Later they used a corrugated iron shed opposite, known as the 'Blue Cinema' Eventually a couple of old derelict cottages were taken over as a Working Man's Club in the early 1900's. Residents helped by supplying extras such as books for their use. The cottages were burnt down in about 1904.
Teas where served there for the various village functions, and it was also let out for wedding receptions, 21st birthday parties, and concerts. Whist drives were held there and the Sunday School was held in the small Committee/kitchen room every week. When the Women's Institute was formed in 1939 they had their monthly meetings there and the Hall was used by the members, for canning fruit during the war.
It is now used by the Parish Council, Keep Fit and Yoga for their regular meetings and also an Art Club and a Bridge Club weekly. In addition it is hired out for a variety of functions, parties and the like. It also is a huge contributor to the Parish Bonfire Night and Fete.
